Greetings!
In this issue we bring before you prayer requests for astronauts'
families, for our president and troops, and for Christians in Iraq.
"Therefore, I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers,
intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men,
for kings and all who are in authority,
That we may lead a quiet and peaceable life
in all godliness and reverence.
For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,
Who desires all men to be saved
and to come to the knowledge of the truth."
(I Timothy 2: 1-4)
Also included in this issue is information for studies based
on special days and events from history.
In the next issue we will resume our 15-Part Basic Skills
Series.
May you know the wonderful, unfailing love of God and pass
it on to your family and others!
Sincerely,
Sue Welch

Space Shuttle Columbia:
Astronauts' Faith Touches Lives
Col. Rick Husband and Lt. Col. Michael Anderson were
professed Christians who impacted many who knew them in life,
and many more who have learned of them since their deaths.
In a recorded interview that both men made prior to going
on the 16-day mission, Anderson said, "Rick and I both feel that
we were put on this mission together for a reason . . . We'd just
like to really ask for your prayers as we get ready to go on this
16-day mission -— and not only prayers for a safe flight but also
that, in some small way, we can use this platform as a way to
really let people know what we believe and to really let God's
message get out there." Read more at:

February Is Black History Month
This celebration is the brainchild of historian Carter
Woodson, the son of former slaves. He chose the month of February
for the celebration because of the proximity of the birthdays of
Abraham Lincoln (Feb. 12) and Frederick Douglass (Feb. 14).

Pray for Our President
We can thank the Lord for a president who is bold in
acknowledging the Lord. In his State of the Union address,
President Bush said:
"Americans are a free people who know that freedom is the
right of every person and the future of every nation. The liberty
we prize is not America's gift to the world; it is God's gift to
humanity.
We Americans have faith in ourselves, but not in ourselves
alone. We do not claim to know all the ways of Providence, yet
we can trust in them, placing our confidence in the loving God
behind all of life and all of history. May he guide us now, and
may God continue to bless the United States of America."
President George W. Bush, 2003 State of the Union Address.
Pray for President Bush that he will:
Seek, know, and follow the Lord's will in leading our nation.
Be protected and be strong physically and spiritually.
Also pray for members of his administration and his family.

Pray for Our Troops
As many troops are being deployed and the threat of war
continues, families are being separated and thoughts are turning
to spiritual matters. We have the opportunity to supply prayer
support for all the military personnel who place themselves in
harm's way to preserve and protect our freedom.
__ Pray that Christians in the Military will have an effective
witness and ministry of comfort.
__ Pray for families that are separated.
__ Pray that many will turn to the Lord.

February 14: Valentine's Day
"Beloved, let us love one another:
for love is of God;
And every one that loveth is born of God,
and knoweth God.
He that loveth not knoweth not God;
for God is love.
In this was manifested the love of God toward us,
because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world,
hat we might live through him.
Herein is love, not that we loved God,
ut that he loved us,
nd sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
Beloved, if God so loved us,
e ought also to love one another."
(1 John 4:7-11)

Send 5 Different Kinds of Valentines
"Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue,
but in deed and truth. (1 John 3:18)
Help your children send different kinds of expressions of
love -- on Valentine's Day and all year long.
Remember, God asks us to love both the lovely and the
unlovely. Find someone this Valentine's day that you would not
naturally feel love for or show love to and do so for the Lord's
sake. He loved us when we were unlovely to Him.
1. Words of Affirmation.
This is the traditional Valentine card, bought or creatively
hand made. The more specific the message, the more meaningful
it is. Do not just tell your loved one how much you love him, but
how much you appreciate certain of his attributes or actions.
Everyone loves this kind of Valentine!
2. Quality Time.
Quality time is time spent together without distractions,
focusing on your loved one and his needs and interests. Invite
a friend or family over for a meal, invite a neighbor
in for a cup of tea, take one child at a time on an errand and
talk about his interests, go on a walk with your husband when
he comes home and listen to his report of the day, or visit a
shut-in and ask him to share something about his life.
3. Gifts.
Small purchased or handmade gifts are a tangible expression
of love. Flowers, a pretty pen or pencil, a hair clip or piece
of jewelry, a pot holder, framed photo, bookmark, embroidered
hankie, favorite baked food, etc. can remind your loved one of
your love for him as he sees and uses the gift.
4. Acts of Service.
Serving the needs of a loved one really shows that you
care. Do one of your loved one's regular chores, run an errand
or do something he hasn't had time to do, sew on a button or mend
a garment, notice something he needs and bring it to him, etc.
5. Physical Touch.
Hugs, kisses, back rubs, or touching a shoulder as you pass
by are appropriate for family members. A hearty hand shake or
a hug for a member of the same gender is appropriate for others.

This Day in History
The study of special days can provide a break from or
supplement to your usual studies. You will encounter a wide
variety of subjects that you might otherwise not learn about.
These forays into the past might inspire a one-day,
mini unit study involving reading, writing, history, science, the
arts, and/or character training. Further research can be done
immediately by supervised internet searches of more or related
information. Always try to include Bible to see if God says
anything on the subject.
You might extend your studies if they have caught the
interest of your students and progress is being made in learning,
or you might be satisfied to simply read the entry and go on.

Sunny Side Up: Is There a Ticket for Speed Reading?
I tend to be a "skimmer" of mail because of time constraints and
it has gotten me in trouble more than once.
Skimming down your e-mail, I read "Fire Safety Information"
which I thought I should probably read in case there was something
I should teach our children. I skimmed a little too far and read:
"Because we were separated from God by sin, Jesus Christ died
in our place, then rose to life again. If we trust Jesus Christ
as our Savior and Lord, He will give us eternal life.
"For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that
not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works,
that no one should boast" (Eph. 2:8, 9).
I thought, "Boy this e-mail hit it right on the head. That is
exactly the BEST fire safety information we can teach our children."
In rereading the printed e-mail (I always print them and read
them during "mommy time"), I figured out my error.
